An explosion at a fireworks factory in southern India has killed at least 30 people.

Officials say Wednesday's blast triggered a massive blaze that swept through the fireworks plant in Tamil Nadu state.

Witnesses say huge plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the factory in the town of Sivakasi.

Authorities were pulling bodies from the debris, and fear the death toll could rise. Dozens of people were injured in the blaze. Local media said more than 250 people were working at the factory at the time of the blast.

The cause of the explosion was not immediately known.

Fireworks are often used during religious festivals and weddings in India.
