American Serena Williams won the U.S. Open women's singles title Sunday, beating world number one Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in a dramatic final.

Williams, the reigning Wimbledon champion and Olympic gold medalist in singles and doubles, clawed back from a shaky second set in New York to earn her 15th grand slam title — 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

After losing the first set, Azarenka looked to be on the verge of a victory when she led 5-3 in the decider.

She got within two points of winning the championship but was unable to prevent Williams reeling off the last four games in a row to seal her fourth U.S. Open title.

The U.S. Open men's final on Monday will feature Olympic gold medalist Andy Murray of Britain and reigning champion Novak Djokovic of Serbia.

The men's final was postponed to Monday after Saturday's semi-final between Djokovic and David Ferrer of Spain was suspended because of bad weather. Djokovic defeated Ferrer in four sets — 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 — on Sunday.
