Pope Benedict has arrived in Lebanon where he is expected to call for peace and reconciliation between Christians and Muslims.

The pontiff was greeted by cheering supporters and dignitaries, including Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, as he arrived at a Beirut airport on Friday, the start of a three-day visit.

Reuters says the pontiff told reporters the Arab Spring was a positive “cry for freedom.” He also called weapons imports to Syria a “grave sin.”

Nearly 40 percent of Lebanon's population is Christian. During his visit, the pontiff will meet with Lebanese officials and leaders of its Christian communities.
