Japanese markets closed lower Friday, while the U.S. dollar is trading higher against the Japanese yen.

Tokyo's Nikkei index lost over one-half of one percent to finish at 8,738.

The dollar was selling at 77.58 yen, a gain of a fraction of a yen from Thursday.

Gold is trading at $1,879.52 an ounce.
