European stock markets were sharply lower in midday trading Monday. London’s Financial Times 100 index dropped 2.07 percent , to 5,107. The CAC-40 in Paris plunged 4.11 percent , to 2,852. Japanese share prices ended sharply lower Monday, while the dollar fell against the yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index dropped 2.3 percent to close at 8,536. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 76.85 yen, down three-quarters of a from late Friday. Gold was trading at $1,846.40 an ounce.

Japanese share prices ended sharply lower Monday, while the dollar fell against the yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index dropped 2.3 percent to close at 8,536. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 77.10 yen, down half a yen from late Friday. The Taipei market was closed for a holiday .

Slight Losses on Japan’s Nikkei

Japanese markets closed lower Friday, while the U.S. dollar is trading higher against the Japanese yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index lost over one-half of one percent to finish at 8,738. The dollar was selling at 77.58 yen, a gain of a fraction of a yen from Thursday. Gold is trading at $1,879.52 an ounce.
