Asian stock markets were mixed in early trading Friday. Tokyo’s Nikkei index gained half a percent , to close at 9,514. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropped eight-tenths of a percent , to end at 22,418. Elsewhere, share prices were lower in Taipei and Manila. Markets closed higher in Shanghai, Sydney and Wellington. Tokyo Stocks Up, Dollar Down

Japanese share prices ended higher Friday, while the dollar slipped against the yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index gained half a percent , to close at 9,514. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 80.08 yen, down three-tenths of a yen from late Thursday. The Taipei market dropped 1.81 percent , to close at 8,838.

Japan’s Nikkei Loses Ground

Japanese markets closed higher Thursday, while the U.S. dollar is higher against the Japanese yen. Tokyo’s Nikkei index gained nearly one-quarter of one percent to finish at 9,467. In currency trading, the dollar was selling at 80.01, a gain of more than one-tenth of a yen from Wednesday. Gold is trading at $1,534.33 an ounce.
