NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, was capturing images of the Sun when it was “photobombed” by the moon during a lunar transit on 10/19/17. The space agency says the transit lasted about 45 minutes. The images were captured in extreme ultraviolet light. Since this kind of light is invisible to human eyes they had to be colorized in green so we could see them. (NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center/SDO/Joy Ng)

On 10/27/17, astronauts onboard the International Space Station harvested and later feasted on three varieties of leafy greens from their Veggie growth chamber. Growing vegetables in space is part of a series of experiments in the development of bioregenerative food production systems for not only the space station but also long-duration exploration missions. Astronaut, Jeremy Hansen of the Canadian Space Agency is suspended over a mock-up of the International Space Station during a microgravity simulation in the Active Response Gravity Offload System at NASA’s Johnson Space Center on 10/24/17. To mimic the 90 minute day to night cycle astronauts experience in orbit, testing was conducted in both light and darkness. The space agency says the crew’s feedback will be used for future space walks. (NASA/Josh Valcarcel)
