U.S. immigrants appear to be integrating faster than expected, according to a new report, which finds that the grandchildren of Hispanics and Asians are less likely to identify themselves by these ethnicities on government surveys than their parents and grandparents are.

This is especially true of children of mixed marriages.

“Most of this ethnic attrition, or most of this kind of missing identification, is from inter-marriage,” said economist Stephen Trejo of the University of Texas at Austin. “So, if both of my parents have Hispanic ancestry, then it’s almost for sure that I’m labeled as Hispanic. But, if I only have Hispanic ancestry on one side of my family…and not the other, then there’s a much lower rate of identification.”

In 2010, about 15 percent of all marriages in the United States were between spouses with a different race or ethnicity from each other. The percentages are even higher for Hispanics and Asians. Twenty-six percent of Hispanics and 28 percent of Asians married out, according to the Pew Research Center.

Marrying someone of a different race or ethnicity is much more common among the native-born population than among immigrants. Hispanics born in the United States are almost three times more to marry a non-Hispanic than foreign-born Hispanics.

Among Asians, 38 percent of the native-born and 24 percent of the foreign-born married a non-Asian.

Consequently, this third generation — the grandchildren of foreign-born Americans — is missing when experts like Trejo and fellow economist Brian Duncan from the University of Colorado, attempt to accurately measure the progress of those later generation groups.

“It’s the less educated Asians that are more likely to intermarry and it’s their kids that we’re missing,” Trejo said, “and so, for the Asians, we’re missing some of the lower educated individuals and so we’re overstating their progress at least a bit.”

However, for Hispanics, the opposite appears to be true.

“For Hispanics, the people who intermarry tend to be higher educated and higher earning,” Trejo said. “What that means is that the people we are missing, children of mixed marriages, could be doing better but we don’t see that in the data because they’re missing.”

It’s possible that in time, Asians and Hispanics will proudly reclaim their lost heritage as the Irish have done. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Irish newcomers faced virulent anti-immigrant and anti-Catholic sentiment. However, by 1980, when possessing Irish ancestry had become decidedly mainstream, the U.S. Census found that far more Americans claimed Irish ancestry than could be explained by immigration and birth patterns.

The same occurred with the Native American population.

“A lot more people in 1980 than in 1970 where choosing to report their race as Native American rather than white,” Trejo said. “And part of that was, I think, the awareness of Native Americans. There’d been a lot more publicity about Native Americans. Thing like that can happen and change these subjective identifications.”

It’s also possible that this so-called ethnic attrition is a natural result of the American melting pot, when people from many different countries, races and religions come to the United States in search of a better life and intermarry and assimilate, eventually becoming one homogeneous population.

“In some ways, it is an example of the melting pot,” Trejo said. “Inter-marriage and identifying with the mainstream is, in some ways, a really strong indicator of assimilation and so, in that sense, it’s a good thing.”

Asians are not of a different ethnicity but of a different race.
    They are not White.

    • Joey1056 says:

Toni: “Asians are not of a different ethnicity but of a different race.”
Actually, Toni, Asia is a place, not a race. It contains the races of Han, Japanese, Malay, etc. These very distinct genetic races are collected together as “Asian” only because it is too complicated to do otherwise.

      • Blueberries says:

By your logics, the Russians and the Aussies are also Asians?

        • Joey1056 says:

          @Blueberries
“By your logics, the Russians and the Aussies are also Asians?”
Australia is a different place. If you look on a map, it is called “Australia”

And yes, there are Asian Russians, they look similar to Mongolians, Tibetans and Chinese. Russia is a country, not a race. It contains several different races and ethnicities within its borders.

    • TSD says:

Sigh…”race” is a social construct. Ethnicity is the proper term. The only human “race” in existence is Homo Sapiens, of which everyone alive is a member.

      • gooch says:

        even blacks?

      • shylastrikes says:

        Homo sapian is a species…human species…

The races are Caucasian, Mongolian, Negroid and Australoid.

Ethic groups make up a race. This could mean German, French, Spanish (Spain, not latin america in general) or can be more specific.

You might want to do some basic research before spreading radical far left propaganda about race.

      • lc smith says:

Yawn. Give it a rest, TSD! The world is tired of that BS. Races do exist.

      • Lexx says:

omg, i cant believe that in this day and age some ppl still dont know what race is…. Let me put it this way, because this is what our racial situation is like. We are like dogs….you have Rotweilers, you have golden retrievers, poodles, chihuahuas, Dobermans, etc…. They are the same species, because they can procreate with each other harmlessly, but they are different RACES….NOT different ‘ethnicities’, but RACES. We are the human species (Homo Sapien-Sapien), because we can all procreate w/ one another harmlessly, as in our offspring wont be born looking like a piece of tofu. If for example a blonde Swedish man banged a Zulu tribeswoman, their child will be fine (obviously except if there’s random defect, which as you know can occur with any type of childbirth)… If a Han Chinese woman bang an Australian aborigine, their child will be born fine. And so on and so on. You can grab any human from any part of the world and make them bang someone from the opposite side of the world, and their children will be born non-tofu-like. We are different races, but the same species. Just like dogs. Do u understand now?

  2. bubbasparxxx says:

I though we were trying to get passed all this racial, racist stuff, how can we if we are going to go on putting people into different little boxes?

A Black and a white couple are still being called “Mixed”? an Hispanic and an Asian are “Mixed” a Black and a Hispanic are “Mixed”? and Asian and a white are “mixed”? WTF is going on? We will never get rid of our racist past if you refuse to stop differentiating people by color or ethnicity!

    • The Carnivore says:

We aren’t trying to get past it. Mixed marriages lead to dumb kids, which leads to an elite class of those who didn’t willingly destroy their genealogy. Keep breeding with the wrong people, you fools.

      • thatdude says:

My mixed kids are among the top students in their classes, and they aren’t alone in being of mixed ethnicity and high performing. Only a stupid person thinks skin color is genetically linked to intelligence.

    • joey1055 says:

Diversity cannot exist in a mobile society in the long run without racism.

People who are not racist will mix their culture and genes, eliminating the lines between them.

    • The Law says:

That’s a beautiful ideal, but it seems to be part of human nature to identify people first and foremost by ethnicity. If you can look at someone and not notice their ethnicity at all, then you are indeed a special person. It’s no surprise Asians intermarry with whites more commonly. I always thought they wanted to identify more with white for status, that seems to be particularly important in Asian culture. I think that’s why the black women who marry white men do it, to become farther removed from the stigmas attached to being black in America.

      • MixedWoman says:

Sigh. Has it ever occurred to you that people don’t marry each other for “status”? Maybe there is no agenda. Maybe it’s much more boring than that and they just love each other like any other marriage. Is there any room in anyone’s mind for a ridiculous concept like that?

    • Midwayer says:

“I though we were trying to get passed all this racial, racist stuff, how can we if we are going to go on putting people into different little boxes?

As long as some group somewhere can generate revenue via “race” it will never end. These 3rd generation “mixed” couples are exactly what this nation needs to shut down the race baiters. Besides, the more our ethnicities are blended, the better off humanity will be. Imagine a European Caucasian blended with someone who is part Filipino & Chinese. Then, their progeny would marry someone who is part black and someone from the Indian sub-continent. The more we are blended, the better off we’ll be.

    • Hambone says:

Classification by ” Race” is based on grouping by physical traits and “Ethnicity ” is grouping by cultural traits. This nomenclature
comes from the field of Anthropology. It is not BS, it is science. Only bleeding heart liberals want to blur these meanings or eradicate them altogether.

  3. mar says:

Hispanic is not a race based category. You can be white, black, Asian, Indian etc. under the Hispanic category. If my mother is a Black Dominican and my father is a Black American, my RACE is black. I am not mixed raced. My parents are differently culturally, not racially. However, if my father is a white Cuban and my mother is black (from anywhere), I would be mixed race. Race and Ethnicity are two different things. Being married to someone Hispanic doesn’t classify it as a mixed-marriage because Hispanic is not a race.

    • jay says:

yeah that’s a big flaw as many of these so called interracial marriages involving an hispanic/latino are not. A black belizean in LA marrying a african american is not a interracial relationship/marriage.

    • Death Star says:

Black is not a race either it is color not a race. Neither is being white a race. Please explain what is being black or white.

      • Hambone says:

Go to a good University library and check out a book on physical anthropology . Read it ! Your answers will be there regardless of whether you like the answers or not. The comments by ” Shylastrikes ” made above are a start.

    • Mr. Truth says:

If you read the King James bible God states that your ethic group is determined by your father. An example Bob Marley people think he is black but he is not. His dad was white so Bob Marley is actually just a dark skinned white man. The book of Numbers chapter 15 tells you this I am not sure what verse.

  4. Joey1055 says:

I do not see that difference among Asians on who they marry by income as a general observation.

For a while in many places, fully half the Asian females raised in the US married non-Asians, mostly whites. That gives 25% the interracial marriage rate right there, which is consistent with the numbers above.

I am in STEM, and even in my day, Asians were disproportionally represented among students, and I would say 75% of these highly educated and future high income earner Asian women were with non-Asian men, most of which they married. I have dated many highly educated, upper class Asian women who refuse to date anyone who isn’t white, including an MD, a lawyer, and several biologists, engineers and nurses.

If anything, I see lower income Asians under pressure to marry Asians of their same ethnicity, in order to prevent alienating the uneducated parents. An exception would be Filipinos, where women from poor families are encouraged to marry whites.

    • TSD says:

I had a co worker who kept trying to hook me up with her friend. Both my co-worker and her friend were Chinese immigrants. It felt more like she was making a business proposition to me than set up a date. She kept telling me all the girls accomplishments, Masters in Mechanical Engineering etc. and wanted to show her to me without meeting if I wanted to see if I found her appealing. The whole situation made me uncomfortable, so i said I wasn’t interested, she seemed really confused why.

    • Alec says:

      interesting

    • Tiedie2003 says:

That’s not what the article saying. The article is saying the less educated asian females are more likely to intermarry and it’s only %28. Don’t exaggerated too much. Your observation in your rocks do not constitute a report joey1055.

    • Jeff says:

Honestly Joey, you’re right when it comes to these characteristics. Even now, living as an expat Hispanic American in Thailand, certain things are very apparent. Aside from any fact that only a small portion of Thais will actually date or marry a foreigner, those that do, will almost always explicitly only go with a white person as they consider everyone else to be of lower status. Going with whites only actually goes for either poorer Thai women but most especially the rich hi-so ones. I’ve this to be a very common trait of most Asians though when it comes to marrying outside of their own.

    • Don says:

I agree with you Joey1055. The women who come from the nations located in Far East Asia, and South East Asia are probably the most racist bigots in the world when it comes to dating Black men. The majority are to hate filled to even consider such a thing. Yes! They nearly exclusively prefer White men. It’s almost akin to borderline worship of White men judging by the public interactions I witness. I tend to worship God!

    • Cheng Liu says:

Perhaps from your extremely limited view that may be true, but I am willing to bet that the overwhelming majority of Asian-American women from all social classes marry Asian-American men.

      • Hambone says:

I notice that Asians who are proud of being Asian are the ones that marry another Asian. In California we have many Filipinos, Chinese , Vietnamese in interracial marriages. I think this creates identity problems for their kids later in life.

    • Tae says:

That is the dumbest and most ignorant comment.first of all the most interracial mixing is hands down Black males and white females.Asians make up a relatively low population in the US and the ratio of Asian women to Asian men are uneven which may lead to dating outside their race. Not that many Asian women intermix.White females on the other hand cannot stop intermixing with black males but it is always glided over due to the fact that it’s an embarrassment for white males to admit. If anything Asisns parents rich or poor do not want their kids intermixing. There are a lot of white westerners that fly to Asia to take advantage of poor and uneducated Asian females.

      • joey1055 says:

        @Tae

“There are a lot of white westerners that fly to Asia to take advantage of poor and uneducated Asian females.”
They also take advantage of highly educated females capable of making a lot of money.

I couldn’t tell you how many Fil-Am couples I know where the woman is a nurse or accountant, and the woman was living in the Philippines when they met. One couple is funny. The man is a technician and makes about $55k/yr. He found a recent nurse graduate in the Phils. They married, had two kids, and she did odd jobs for little money, then when the kids got to school, she got her nursing license in the US and she now makes $95k. She is way out of his league. He is a lucky dude.

    • Lexx says:

Yup. Thats how most East Asians are, im particularly talking about Koreans, Chinese [including Taiwanese], and Japanese. They adore white skin, and the White race, mostly those of Northern European descent such as Germanics, and Celts, although they dont think Whites are above them. To them, Whites are the second-best race in the world. It’s quite disgusting. The East Asian groups mentioned above are the most racist ethnic groups on Earth, even more so than the Arabs [see how they treat Black people], and definitely far more racist than your typical White person. To these East Asian groups, the only decent/acceptable people are themselves, and secondly Whites. All other racial groups are considered maggots to them. Just spend some time in Koreatown here in L.A. to witness first-hand, but mildly, what i am saying. But there are many MANY exceptions though, simply because there are so many of these East Asians (China alone has 1.3 billion), so you do see many outliers; although these outliers ARE a small percentage of the whole East Asian ‘pie’.

    • C C G says:

Half of Asian women marry out? And 5% of Asian men marry out? Seriously, that’s what you think? The numbers are 36% Asian women marry out and 17% of Asian men marry out. I mean the stats are provided in a link… That study is from 2010 and from more recent articles the numbers have already begun to reverse as Asian American men continue to accumulate wealth and become taller through better nutrition. That’s what it really boils down to. Women of all races are usually attracted to money/status and height. I have an Asian friend who is 6’3″ (which essentially makes him a unicorn) and he has to do very little to attract women of all races. At times he can literally sit there and say nothing and women will gush over him. I remember one time a girl pretended to be wasted and tripped on herself so she could fall into his arms. Its was really insane…

      • joey1055 says:

@C C G “Half of Asian women marry out?”
Read carefully. I said, “In some places”.

The statistics that it is 36% is overall, and includes places where Asians are the majority and therefore have large numbers (much of the Bay area, Hawaii, Monterey Park). In places where Asians are a minority, it is in fact closer to 50% for Asian women to marry outside their race, mostly to whites. I do know some places where there are not many Asians at all where the number is closer to 100%.

The largest correlation on whether any particular person will marry another race is on the percent of his own race he knows. If you are a 2% minority, regardless of which minority, there is already a 98% bias to overcome that you will marry a different race.

    • Chris says:

      Joey,

I have to agree with you regarding education and marriage. I can only speak from experience – but when I met my wife (Vietnamese) she was 1 of only 3 students in her entire high school class that passed the test to go to University in Hanoi. All the other students were only permitted to attend college (2 years). But as I said, this is only 1 experience – not a collective.

A Hispanic is a person from, or a descendant of, people from the ancient land of Hispania, the Latin name for what is now Spain and Portugal.

This is a White group. Caucasoids. A Hispanic does not need a non-hispanic white to “to be white”.

Asians are not caucasoids (white). Asians are Mongoloids.

This is one of the most ignorant articles that I’ve read in a while.

    • Jessica Miller says:

I agree. Hispania is a Region in Southern Europe, the Roman Empire divided Europe in several regions: Hispania (spain and portugal), Galia (france), Germania (germany and austria), Britannia (Great Britain ), Mauritania (Northern Africa), Syria (Syria), Italia (Italy), Bohemia (Eastern Europe), etc. People from Hispania, are Hispanics. So, we are talking about Caucasian people, being tagged as a different race in the United States.

    • Brad Kingsland says:

This is article however exact, is proof that soon the white race will be eliminated. White people simply don’t mate and are under a huge attack not only by their own liberal base, but minority hate and envy. Someday the people who built and invented everything around you will vanish because of this. Just do the math, the world will become Mestizo, Mulatto and Muslims and Asians and mixed peoples.

    • trayec says:

Benjamin, you are 100% correct, but most people think that there are more than the 3 original race,

  10. Hannah Katz says:

But we do see some cases where an Anglo and a Latino or Latina get married and the kids are classified as Hispanic so that they can get the benefits of being a protected minority group member. Easier admission to college, special set-asides in hiring, etc.

  11. BeauCharles says:

I’m glad people are making it hard for government pigeon-holers to figure out what divisive racial or ethnic box to stick them in.

  12. Todd Glen says:

The article says that in the future these mixed people might identify with hispanic or asian again like the irish did in the 80s. The problem with that is that the irish mixed in predominately with other north europeans and if they didnt could claim other ancestry, their grand children could feel irish even though they may have been mixed with other north europeans. In the U.S. ethnic identity is based on its perception of race. A third generation mixed asian child could have more european ancestors and therefore feel white. Hispanics aren’t really a race and are more of a cultural group that can claim any race. A third generation mixed hispanic would feel as hispanic as a dutch-french-italian person would feel italian. The dominate cultural and racial ethnicities in the U.S. are white and black. Anybody who intermaries with white or black their children usually claim white or black. One big influence isn’t apearance but location and the society that the person lives in. For example many children with black fathers and white mothers identify as black even though their technically both. This could be because of the father figure, the hometown his predominately black or the fact that it is culturaly chic to be black in U.S. society today.

  16. Werner Schneider says:

Hispanics are not necessarily white. They can be as ethnically mixed as Central Europeans e.g. usually are. Latinos is a much better term than hispanics, because it says that the person has a Spanish (or Portuguese) speaking ancestry. And with integration this is a different matter. An in-law-niece of mine (Asian; graduated nurse) emigrated to the US a couple of years ago with her husband and two young kids (kindergarten-age). Once there it was decided to integrate in rapid speed and this meant that with immediate effect English was the only spoken language in the family, especially with the kids. In the meantime the kids can only just understand their mother-tongue, but don’t really speak it anymore and their English and behaviour is as American as if they were born there. Of course the whole family are US citizens in the meantime. Meaning: When one wants to radically integrate under all circumstances (and mainly forget the own heritage too) the person can do so quite quickly, the younger one is the better. Although from my point of view the heritage of a person (if it’s unique and concentrated on a special country) should be cultivated incl. the language. Because this has nothing to do with integration per se. My wife and I are in a mixed relationship too and if we would have a child we would have brought it up in three languages from the very beginning: my mother-tongue, her mother-tongue and English.

You can go to reddit and look up Hapas to confirm the effects of White-Asian intermarriages and assimilation. Asians and Hispanics are subjected to racism from some people in the White majority whether at school, work, or in public. If you were part White wouldn’t you tell everyone that you were White? There is simply no incentive to claim your Asian or Hispanic heritage if it only invites more racism. When racism against Native Americans was high then nobody claimed they were part Native American but just went with the flow and called themselves White. In other words, distancing yourselves from your original Asian, Hispanic, Native American ancestors is simply voluntary ethnic cleansing. Unfortunately, not all mixed race Hapas/Eurasians can look completely White. Elliot Rogers was part Chinese and part British but he couldn’t quite make it all the way to being 100% White so he decided to be racist against all races during his murder spree in Santa Barbara against Chinese, Hispanics and Whites.

Now, our home seems like a speech institute for the fact that we both speak 4 different languages combined, as for our kids, they speak 2-3 languages. Intermarriage in my town in very common. The vast majority of Hispanics are NOT White. I live in California which is crawling with Hispanics and most of the time I can easily tell Hispanics apart from White Gringos just based on phenotype/physical appearance alone.

Living in California does not feel like living in a majority White state because most of the Hispanics here do not look White.

You gather 100 random Mexican Americans for example and than gather 100 random Polish Americans and it would be extremely easy to tell the two groups apart just on phenotype alone.

Whether we like it or not, mixed Marriages are the thing of the future. I have dated White, Black, Latina and Asian. All I can say is I loved it all, one race didn’t stick out more then the other in my opinion. When you cut my skin open, it bleeds red just like all other nationality’s.

  27. Tass says:

Beware of someone who just wants a green card, or just wants to live in a better country. They will say or do anything to get here, including marrying someone they don’t really love.

  28. Dan Beall says:

It is sad to see this happening. We should be celebrating the uniqueness of the different people of Earth, not blending each other away into some non descript mud brown people. Diversity destroys the uniqueness of all races. Genghis con tried to diversify his empire and it destroyed him. Diversity destroys nations, and the uniqueness of all people. Interracial marriage should be avoided like the plague.

“blending each other away into some non descript mud brown people. Diversity destroys”

Thanks for providing a good example of stupidity. “Blending” has the opposite meaning of “Diversity”.

      Did you pass 5th grade?

  29. Cheng Liu says:

“It’s possible that in time, Asians and Hispanics will proudly reclaim their lost heritage as the Irish have done.”

One of my friends did that. His grandparents lost a lot of their Japanese heritage during WWII when they were sent to internment camps. When he grew up he studied Japanese and can now speak it better than they can.

  30. kb says:

Mixed marriages are not causing integration, idiots. Those groups are simply more like whites to begin with and are therefore more likely to marry them. The dorky intellectual white guy is the one who marries an Asian. That’s not the same kind of white guy who marries a Latina. But whites are diverse genetically.

  31. Robert says:

The most famous of all Asian+Hispanic mixed child? ART CHIN – the USA’s FIRST ACE FIGHTER PILOT of WWII-Sino-Japanese War.

    • Rhonin says:

@Robert, thanks for the info on Arthur Chin (Chinese Father/Peruvian Mother). I didn’t know about that guy in Chinese-American history. There was also a US Medal of Honor World War II recipient Francis Wai (Chinese Father/Native Hawaiian mother). He was killed at the age of 27 in World War II. I guess there are many mixes besides Chinese and Caucasian.

  32. Jefferson says:

“A Hispanic is a person from, or a descendant of, people from the ancient land of Hispania, the Latin name for what is now Spain and Portugal.

This is a White group. Caucasoids. A Hispanic does not need a non-hispanic white to “to be white”.”

Most Hispanics are not White, most are racially Mixed. A whole lot of racial miscegenation took place in Latin America between Africans, Spaniards, and Amerindians.

Latin America is not the epitome of genetic White racial purity.

  33. HiGuy says:

Lol I love how any discussion on race quickly turns towards bashing black people. The insecurity on display all around is astounding. As a black dude, let me tell you that I could care less whether a collective race wants to screw me or not. I screw individuals not races, and if an individual has an issue with being with me over race then the solution is easy: move on to one of the other 3+ billion women on the planet (obviously this is an overestimation as there are children and elders in this number)

  34. James says:

there are 3+ billion caucasians in the world

  35. duncan says:

what are races when you are born being coluored or mixed can you change ?All belongs to the life giver

  36. duncan jena says:

we all are human let’s stay together as one
